A former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing persistent internal crisis within the opposition party.

He announced his decision in a letter dated 11 March 2026, addressed to the Ward Chairman of Tambuwal/Shinfiri in Sokoto South Senatorial District.

In the letter, the former governor said his decision followed extensive consultations and deep reflection, adding that the internal conflicts within the PDP had made it difficult for him to remain in the party.

“Today, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and I have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman in writing,” he stated.

Tambuwal, who previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later as Governor of Sokoto State, expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunities it gave him to serve the country.

“The PDP has been a significant part of my political journey, and I remain grateful for the opportunities it gave me to serve our nation, including as Speaker of the House of Representatives and as Governor of Sokoto State during my second term in office,” he said.

However, he noted that the persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the party had weakened its unity and direction.

According to him, these developments necessitated his decision to leave the party.

Tambuwal disclosed that he had joined the African Democratic Congress alongside his associates and supporters, expressing confidence that the party offers a stronger political platform for national development.

“I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he added.

The former governor reaffirmed his commitment to the service of the country and the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity.
