Supreme Upholds Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s Election

The Supreme Court, on upheld the election of Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State.

The apex court, in its judgement Thursday, dismissed an appeal of the People’s Democratic Party PDP and its candidate, Saidu Umar Ubandoma filed to challenge the outcome of the governorship election on March 18th 2023.

Ubandoma and his party had contended that governor Ahmed Aliyu, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC was not dully elected during the gubernatorial contest held in the state.

Both the Sokoto State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal in Abuja have earlier dismissed Ubandoma’s case and upheld governor Aliyu election victory in their separate verdicts.

The PDP and it’s candidate dissatisfied with the verdicts of the two lower courts, the duo approached the Supreme Court, contending that, they have a case with their available exhibits and evidences tendered which were not properly scrutinized by the the two lower courts.

While dismissing the appeal on Thursday for lack of substance, the apex court, in a unanimous decision by by five member panel led said they found no reason to dislodge the judgements of the two lower courts and thereby affirmed Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto as substantive and dully elected Governor of Sokoto state.
