Save the children international has on Tuesday commenced empowerment training for over 8,500 champions of the war against pneumonia campaign in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Speaking at the opening session of the training, the Social Behaviour Change and Media Coordinator of Integrated Sustainable Childhood Pneumonia and other Infectious Disease Reduction in Nigeria (INSPIRING Project) Mr Ibrahim Haruna said in the last two years, a series of training and capacity building was given to the members of pilot communities on how to identify pneumonia and where to seek timely medical intervention.
He however disclosed that, under the INSPIRING PROJECT financed by GsK pharmaceutical company, medical and other related equipment worth hundreds of millions of Naira was distributed to selected primary and tertiary health facilities in the state.
Mr. Ibrahim added that the community members were clustered into 340 groups and each group has a minimum of 25 people who worked on public enlightenment on pneumonia, child killer disease, and personal and community health.
He stated that to ensure sustainability, INSPIRING is giving the community economic empowerment training through their own choice of job to enable them to have the financial capacity to sustain the community engagement in the absence of Save The Children.
In his speech the Primary Healthcare, Clinics manager Kiyawa local government Mar Musa Muhammad Kani said, the impacts of the inspiring project in the area are tremendous, as progress was reflected in all health indices of the area.
One of the community members who were among the participants of the training, Garba Umar Markiba said, he is going to use the new ideas he learned to improve his source of livelihood and generate more income.
