Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has dismissed the emerging political coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, insisting the effort is doomed to fail.

According to him, Nigerians will continue to support the President to ensure the full realization of his bold reform agenda.

Speaking to journalists and political associates in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu described the coalition, now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as a “mere distraction” that Tinubu should ignore.

“Nigerians will never go back to Egypt,” he said, emphasizing that the group’s goal is to derail the progress the Tinubu administration has made. “The President understands the game and won’t fall for their bait.”

The coalition reportedly includes opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, former ministers Rotimi Amaechi and Nasir el-Rufai, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

While its backers view it as a credible alternative, critics have labeled it an alliance of disgruntled politicians.

Sanwo-Olu defended Tinubu’s leadership, citing reforms and achievements such as foreign exchange market stabilization, the student loan scheme, infrastructure development, increased state revenues post-subsidy removal, oil sector revival, and the proposed national minimum wage.

“President Tinubu is not just a builder of men but a visionary leader with a nationwide impact,” he said.

When asked if the APC was concerned about the ADC’s moves, the Governor replied, “No one should be distracted. The people can see the progress, and history is on Tinubu’s side.”

Echoing sentiments from presidential aides, he described the coalition as a “gathering of desperados” united by bitterness rather than ideology.

“They will run out of steam,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu advised the President to “stay the course,” noting that millions of Nigerians across party lines support his leadership and understand the complexities of governing a nation like Nigeria.

“We’ve come a long way under President Tinubu. The priority must remain on reforms, results, and building a stronger nation. Any attempt to derail that path will not succeed,” he said.

Amid rising rhetoric from opposition groups, the Governor called for calm, discipline, and continued public confidence in the President’s leadership.
