Sallah: Police Warn Jigawa Cattle Dealers Against Fake Currency

News Desk

The Nigerian Police has cautioned cattle dealers of fake currency ahead of the Sallah season, urging everyone, particularly those who buy and sell animals, to be extra cautious in their business dealings.

This warning was issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Jigawa State Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, on Thursday, in an exclusive interview with the PUNCH.

It could be recalled that on May 21, the Jigawa state police command paraded four suspects arrested for fraud and counterfeiting, with counterfeit US dollars and Nigerian currency recovered from them.

Two other suspects were also arrested for forgery, with counterfeit notes and ATM cards recovered from them.

As Eid el Kabir (Sallah) draws near, Muslim faithful rush to cattle markets to buy or sell animals for slaughtering during the Eid-el Akbar Day (Sallah), as enshrined in Islam.

This period is usually characterised by frantic buying and selling, with many people eager to secure the best animals for the occasion.

Unfortunately, this busy and hurried time also provides an opportunity for fraudsters to smuggle in fake currencies and dupe unsuspecting buyers.

Adam warned that these individuals often take advantage of the chaos and confusion in the markets to perpetrate their crimes.

He urged everyone, particularly those who buy and sell animals, to be extra cautious in their business dealings.

He said, “When encountering any suspicious individuals or objects (fraudsters, counterfeit money, etc.), do not hesitate to contact nearby security personnel for immediate assistance.”

He said the police are on high alert ahead of the Sallah season, assuring all that they are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

“We are on alert at all times. We will do everything in our power to prevent crime and protect the public,” he said.

The police spokesperson advised cattle dealers and buyers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities in the state.

Adam, however, added that the police are working hard to prevent crime and protect the public, and they need the cooperation of everyone to achieve this goal.

According to him, as the Sallah season approaches, the police will redouble their effort in maintaining a strong presence across all markets and surrounding areas in the state.

Adam, therefore, urged everyone to be cautious and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately and assured the commitment of the Jigawa State Police toward ensuring that the Sallah season is peaceful and enjoyable for all.

“By working together, we can prevent crime and ensure that everyone has a safe and successful Sallah celebration,” he explained.
