The Kano State Police Command has raised the alarm over the rising menace of dangerous tricycle riding, locally known as “Keke Napep” or “Adaidaita Sahu”, by underage individuals across the Kano metropolis.
A statement on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said this reckless practice, the Command warns, has already resulted in 16 serious and preventable road accidents in August 2025 alone, causing injuries and property damage.
According to the statement, equally troubling is the growing disregard for traffic lights and road regulations by some motorists, leading to avoidable traffic jams, crashes, and risks to human lives.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, stressed that the operation of tricycles by minors is strictly prohibited and carries severe penalties for both the rider and the tricycle owner.
He urged parents and guardians to stop allowing minors to operate tricycles, as the Command will intensify enforcement to curb the trend.
CP Bakori also warned all road users to obey traffic signals and rules, as violators face arrest and prosecution.
He thanked the people of Kano for their cooperation and assured that the Command remains steadfast in safeguarding lives and property.
Special enforcement teams have been deployed, and residents are encouraged to report underage riders, reckless driving, or traffic violations to the nearest police station or via these emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, 09029292926.
