The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters in Kano, has assured the public of fairness and professionalism in its handling of the case involving the Editor-in-Chief of Daily Nigeria, Mr. Jafar Jafar, and the publisher, Mr. Audu Umar.
The assurance follows concerns raised by the League of Civil Society Organizations in Kano over the invitation extended to the journalists.
Police authorities explained that the action was in line with a directive from Chief Magistrate Court No. 15, Normansland Complex, Kano, which mandated an investigation into allegations of criminal conspiracy, defamation, and an attempt to incite public disturbance, as provided under Section 106(4) of the ACJL 2019.
According to a statement on Monday by CSP Bashir Muhammad, Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone One ordered a discreet investigation into the matter.
He clarified that the court directed the police not to detain the journalists until the conclusion of the case.
“The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters, Kano, is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
“We recognize the importance of free speech and independent media in a democratic society and will ensure our actions do not undermine the rights of journalists or the public,” the statement read.
The Police further appealed to the public to allow due process to take its course and to avoid making comments that could prejudice the investigation.
Stakeholders, including civil society organizations and the media, were also urged to cooperate with the police.
The Zone One Command reiterated its commitment to fairness, justice, and the protection of citizens’ rights while ensuring that justice is served.
