Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state over suspected cases of diphtheria infection.
The directive, which takes effect from Monday, 7 September 2026, was announced by the state government as part of preventive measures to contain the suspected outbreak reported in some parts of the state.
A statement issued on Staurday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, said the affected areas include Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
According to the statement, schools that have already resumed academic activities are also required to close from September 7 and remain shut until further notice.
The government directed school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians to comply fully with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remain at home throughout the period.
It said the measure was aimed at protecting the health and wellbeing of pupils, students, teaching and non-teaching staff amid concerns over the suspected diphtheria cases.
The government appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with the directive, assuring residents that appropriate measures were being taken in the best interest of the people of Plateau State.
It added that further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated to the public in due course.
