Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed their resolve to proceed with the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15, 2025, in defiance of opposition from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Rising from their 7th official meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State, the PDP Governors’ Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, issued a communiqué urging members nationwide to remain united and resist “anti-party forces” seeking to derail the convention.
“The Forum reaffirms its full commitment to the resolutions of the 101st NEC meeting of July 2025 regarding the November 15 convention,” the communiqué read.
“We urge members to resist all attempts to derail the convention and to continue to see the PDP as Nigeria’s most viable platform for good governance and national development.”
The governors also expressed concern over worsening insecurity and what they described as the erosion of democratic principles under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
They accused the APC of deepening hardship and division across the country through “reckless policies,” while pledging the PDP’s commitment to repositioning Nigeria.
Their statement comes amid escalating tensions between party loyalists and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who in recent weeks has openly criticized the PDP’s internal processes.
In a television interview on August 19, Wike rejected the South-South caretaker committee set up by the National Working Committee (NWC), insisting that his ally, Chief Dan Orbih, emerged legitimately as National Vice Chairman (South-South) in a congress held in Calabar.
He dismissed claims by the Acting National Chairman that the congress was postponed, warning that such actions could trigger fresh crises.
Wike has also rejected the PDP zoning committee led by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, fueling speculation about a widening rift between him and the party’s mainstream leadership.
Once aligned with the now-defunct G5 bloc of influential PDP figures, Wike has become increasingly isolated, with critics accusing him of undermining the party while serving in the APC-led federal cabinet, an allegation he denies.
Despite these divisions, the PDP governors remain steadfast.
They commended loyal members for resisting defections and distractions, while urging them to shun divisive narratives and focus on rebuilding a stronger opposition capable of returning Nigeria to stability, progress, and inclusive governance.
