The Patriotic Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (PCCSOs), a group comprising 201 member organizations, has distanced itself from a protest staged by a group of five civil society organizations under the banner “Forum of Kano CSOs Against Corruption.”
The coalition, in a statement issued on Saturday in Kano, stated that the protest, which took place on 4 September, did not reflect the collective position of the civil society community in the state, describing the group as “self-styled” and unrepresentative.
According to the PCCSOs, while civil society has a duty to promote transparency and accountability, it must do so with fairness, objectivity, and truth.
The coalition faulted the protest organizers for making sweeping allegations against the Kano State Government and some public officials without waiting for competent authorities to conclude their investigations.
“These remain allegations, not facts.
“Anti-graft agencies are still investigating, and no court of law has found the accused guilty. Passing premature judgment misleads the public and undermines due process,” the statement read.
The coalition highlighted efforts by the Kano State Government to entrench accountability, including compliance with external audits, adoption of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), establishment of procurement monitoring units, and an open budgeting process with CSO participation.
On development projects, the PCCSOs acknowledged ongoing investigations into isolated cases of diversion but argued that it was “unfair” to generalize them as systemic.
The group pointed to progress in road rehabilitation, school renovations, and health sector interventions, which it said had been independently documented by civil society monitors.
The coalition also dismissed claims of harassment of CSOs and the media, insisting that civic space in Kano remained open and that CSOs continue to serve on government oversight platforms.
While reiterating its support for agencies such as the EFCC and ICPC, the PCCSOs warned against politicising the anti-corruption fight or using CSOs as tools for smear campaigns.
“Our collective focus must remain on strengthening institutions, protecting public resources, and ensuring the dividends of governance reach the people,” the statement concluded.
