The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Abdullahi Yahya, on Tuesday reiterated the Union’s unwavering commitment to protecting journalists across the country from assault, harassment, and unlawful detention.

Speaking on Hantsi, a popular live program on Freedom Radio Dutse, Jigawa State, Comrade Yahya said the NUJ has intensified advocacy visits to key law enforcement agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force, to strengthen collaboration and ensure media professionals are protected while carrying out their duties.

“Recently, journalists who were abused and detained by the DSS in Plateau State were released after the organization apologized,” Yahya revealed. “Also, in Lagos, six journalists who were unlawfully detained were set free. Notwithstanding, we continue to urge our members to uphold ethical standards at all times.”

The NUJ President also disclosed that the Union is engaging with the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, to improve the salaries and welfare packages of journalists working in federal government-owned media organizations such as the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Voice of Nigeria (VON), and News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“We are hopeful that if this initiative succeeds, it will be adopted by state-owned media houses,” he added.

Comrade Yahya further announced the Union’s plans to introduce a health insurance scheme for all practicing journalists in Nigeria, aimed at ensuring access to quality healthcare services regardless of location or employment status.

He reaffirmed the NUJ’s resolve to promote ethical journalism, safeguard members’ rights, and enhance the welfare and safety of journalists nationwide.
