The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced a series of major resolutions following its Second Congress Meeting, culminating in a decisive move to suspend its Council Secretary, Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, pending investigations into alleged administrative and financial misconduct.

In a communiqué jointly signed on Saturday by Council Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, and the Acting Secretary, Hauwa Suleiman Zaharaddeen, and issued at the end of the meeting, the council stated that Kwaru’s suspension was necessary to allow for a thorough probe by the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee into allegations of “administrative breaches, financial misappropriation, among others.”

The congress also lauded the Kano State Government for its sustained efforts toward peace and security.

Members praised the prioritization of security in the 2026 budget and commended the recent donation of vehicles and motorcycles to the Nigerian Army to bolster safety across the state. While applauding these strides, the union urged security agencies to intensify efforts in safeguarding lives and property.

Turning to sports, the council called for a comprehensive overhaul of Kano Pillars Football Club, stressing the need for better organization and a more unified strategy to maintain the club’s historic prominence in Nigerian football.

In matters concerning media freedom, the congress expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for fostering an environment that allows journalists to operate without fear or intimidation.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, was likewise commended for strengthening ties with journalists and establishing the League of Veteran Journalists.

The communiqué further urged media executives and practitioners to uphold ethical standards, especially in areas like translation accuracy and proper pronunciation of titles, names, and locations.

Journalists were cautioned against amplifying banditry activities and advised to adhere strictly to the Code of Ethics of the Nigerian Journalist.

The council also appealed to the general public to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security agencies for the safety of the state.

Additionally, it called on the state fire service to intensify public sensitization and preventive campaigns.

The congress applauded its Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, for initiating Press Week activities in line with the NUJ constitution.

It also expressed gratitude to the Director-General of Media and Communications to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, for assisting ailing journalists, including settling the medical bills of veteran reporter Mallam Lawan Isah Bagwai.
