The Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, has secured approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to independently run degree programs in 28 academic fields, marking a major milestone in its transition from a college of education to a full-fledged university.
This follows a 100% rating from the NUC after a comprehensive resource verification exercise, which assessed the institution’s readiness in terms of curriculum, staff strength, and infrastructure.
In a statement issued on Monday on behalf of the Registrar, the university’s Academic Secretary, Dr. Mudi Yakasai, announced that the newly approved degree programs will commence from the 2025/2026 academic session.
Among the courses approved are Education-focused programs such as B.Ed. in Adult and Continuing Education, Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Social Studies and Civil Education, and Business Education.
Arts and Language Education, including B.A. (Ed.) in English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Fulfulde, Arabic, French, Islamic Studies, Christian Religious Studies, History, and Creative Arts Education.
Science and Technical Education, such as B.Sc. (Ed.) in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Integrated Science, Human Kinetics, Agricultural Education, Home Economics, Economics, Political Science, and Geography.
“With this historic development, the institution will officially cease to run NCE (National Certificate in Education) programs from the 2024/2025 academic session,” Yakasai added.
The transition reflects a significant upgrade in the university’s academic standing, enhancing its capacity to produce highly qualified education professionals to meet national and global standards.
