NEMA Issues Flood Warning Alert to Bayelsa, Benue, Others

Isiyaku Ahmed

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued flood warnings to states in central and southern regions of Nigeria to prepare for potential flooding that could soon impact downstream communities.

This alert follows recent floods affecting several states and rising water levels in both the River Benue and River Niger.

NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, emphasized the urgency of activating state and local government authorities, and communities to take proactive measures in mitigating the risk of flooding.

The agency aims to prevent the scale of losses already recorded in affected areas, including loss of life, displacement, and severe damage to property and infrastructure.

The states most at risk in the coming weeks include Benue, Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

NEMA outlined several recommended actions to mitigate flood risks, such as clearing drainages immediately, constructing temporary flood barriers, and relocating from flood plains to higher ground. The agency also advised communities to stay informed through weather updates and flood warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Hydrological Services Agency.

Residents are urged to avoid crossing flooded areas, evacuate flood-prone zones, and cooperate with local emergency services. NEMA is collaborating with state emergency management agencies and other stakeholders via the National Emergency Operations Centre to ensure rescue and relief operations are in place for affected communities.

NEMA Boss stressed the importance of early action and vigilance: “We urge all residents, especially in vulnerable areas, to heed our warnings and take immediate preventive measures to safeguard lives and property. Preparedness is key in reducing the impact of flooding.”
