NDC Dismisses Ardo’s Claims, Defends Legitimacy of INEC Registration

The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected allegations by Dr. Umar Ardo of the ADA, describing his claims about the party’s registration as baseless and politically driven.

In a statement issued by its National Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the party said Ardo’s assertions that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) bypassed due process in registering the NDC were “false, repetitive, and lacking in substance.”

The NDC noted that Ardo has consistently repeated the same allegations across media platforms since his appearance on ARISE NEWS, where he first questioned the party’s emergence.

It argued that his continued focus on the NDC, instead of addressing challenges within his own political platform, raises concerns about his motives.

Providing context for its registration, the party said its application dates back to 2017, when it was among over 170 political associations seeking official recognition.

It explained that the process was initially stalled after INEC raised objections over similarities between its “Victory” hand-sign logo and that of the APC.

Challenging the decision in court, the NDC described INEC’s action as an overreach and a violation of its constitutional rights.

The Federal High Court subsequently ruled in its favour, declaring that the logos were distinct and that the commission’s refusal to register the party was unjustified.

The court then directed INEC to register the NDC, a ruling the commission complied with without appeal.

According to the party, the expiration of the appeal period further confirms the legality of its registration.

The NDC added that since obtaining its certificate, it has taken steps to establish itself structurally, including holding its inaugural National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in the presence of INEC officials. It also confirmed that it has submitted notices for upcoming congresses and its national convention.

The party attributed ADA’s inability to secure registration to internal disagreements, particularly over leadership arrangements.

It is alleged that disputes within the coalition backing ADA led to legal challenges that ultimately undermined its application.

Rather than address these internal issues, the NDC said Ardo has chosen to shift attention by targeting its legitimacy.

It further suggested that the criticisms may be part of a broader effort by certain interests uneasy with its growing acceptance to undermine the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite the controversy, the NDC maintained that it remains focused on expanding its base and positioning itself as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.
