Governor, Malam Umar Namadi on Monday signed the Jigawa State Electricity Commission Regulatory Bill into law as part of the state government’s efforts to enhance electricity regulation and access to constant power supply across the state.
He assented his signature on the law at the Council Chambers, Government House in Dutse.
The legislation recently passed by the Jigawa State House of Assembly, established the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Its mandate includes overseeing electricity generation, transmission, system operation, distribution, and supply in the state.
The law aims to enhance electricity access for residents of Jigawa State while fostering an environment conducive to private sector investment in the power industry.
It also emphasizes the importance of collaboration through public-private partnerships to improve energy infrastructure and service delivery.
Additionally, the law supports the development of diverse electricity solutions, including grid, mini-grid, and off-grid systems, utilizing both renewable and non-renewable energy sources to meet the state’s growing energy demands.
Namadi reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing the state’s energy needs, which is a sine qua non to the state’s development.
“This law is vital toward sustainable development and economic growth in Jigawa State. By strengthening electricity regulation and promoting innovative energy solutions, we aim to create a more reliable and inclusive energy ecosystem for our people,” he said.
Namadi’s administration, earlier this year, and for the first time in the history of Jigawa state, created the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy with Dr. Sirajo Musa as the pioneer commissioner in the ministry.
At the same time, he also hinted at the establishment of a new regulatory body, under the supervision of the same Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, to regulate the distribution and transmission of electricity within the state.
