A delegation from the Government of National Unity held a meeting in Washington, D.C., with officials from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), affiliated with the US Department of the Interior, as part of following up on previous meetings held in October 2025 and February 2026, and to explore prospects for expanding strategic cooperation in the mining sector, according to Libya’s Ministry of Economy and Trade.

The meeting included several senior US officials, alongside a Libyan delegation comprising Minister of Transport Mohammed Al-Shahoubi, Minister of Oil and Gas Khalifa Abdel Sadiq, Minister of Economy Suhail Boushiha, Head of the Executive Team for Presidential Initiatives and Strategic Projects Mustafa Al-Manea, and Director General of the National Mining Corporation Faraj Al-Shandouli.

Discussions focused on activating technical partnership between the National Mining Corporation and the USGS through the launch of advanced, comprehensive geological survey programs aimed at assessing Libya’s mineral wealth, including strategic and rare minerals used in modern industries.

Both sides also discussed ways to develop the mining sector into one of Libya’s alternative economic pillars by improving the investment environment, enhancing the sector’s attractiveness to international companies, and increasing the added value of natural resources within the country.

This move comes as part of the Government of National Unity’s broader strategy to diversify income sources and reduce dependence on oil by opening new avenues for international cooperation in economic and development sectors, particularly amid growing global interest in strategic minerals linked to energy and technology industries.

It also coincides with international efforts to strengthen the security of supply chains for rare minerals, offering Libya potential opportunities to enhance its position in this vital sector in the coming phase.
