Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda has resigned from her position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, just 38 days after assuming the role. Her resignation, tendered on February 17, 2025, comes amidst ongoing controversies following the impeachment of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa.
Meranda’s brief tenure was marked by significant challenges, including heightened tensions within the Assembly and external pressures. Notably, security operatives recently sealed her office, intensifying speculations about her potential resignation. Despite a vote of confidence from her colleagues two days prior, Meranda cited the prevailing political turmoil as a primary reason for her decision to step down.
In her resignation letter, she expressed gratitude for the support received during her tenure and announced her intention to continue serving as a floor member, representing Apapa Constituency I. This development paves the way for the possible reinstatement of Obasa, who has been contesting the legitimacy of his impeachment and may return to the Speaker’s position.
