Kylian Mbappé has claimed he is entitled to 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages, and Paris Saint-Germain has been ordered to pay him this amount by the French league’s legal department, the league announced on Thursday.
A day after the France star turned down the commission’s offer of mediation in his conflict with his old club, the league announced the decision without providing any other information.
Following Mbappé’s request for the commission to become involved, PSG officials and Mbappé’s agents met in Paris on Wednesday. Mbappé signed a free transfer to Real Madrid this summer.
The France striker requested that the commission take notice of the non-payment of three months’ wages and the final third of a loyalty incentive, according to Mbappé’s representatives after the meeting.
PSG declared that it will pursue additional legal action and that it does not intend to pay.
“The matter must now be contested in another legal forum, to which Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to present all the facts over the coming months and year, given the limitations of the commission’s legal scope to take a complete decision on this matter,” the club stated.
After Mbappé decided not to extend his contract with the team, he was sidelined ahead of the 2023–24 season. PSG has claimed that it is not owed money by the World Cup winner because he allegedly agreed to forfeit bonuses in exchange for reintegrating into the team.
“In actuality and law, the player has made clear, repeated public and private commitments that must be respected, having been afforded unprecedented benefits by the club over seven years in Paris,” PSG said after the league’s announcement. “And the club looks forward to these being upheld in the proper forum, if the player seeks to pursue this incomprehensibly reputationally damaging matter further, in due course.”
During his final season at PSG, Mbappé’s relationship with the team came to an end due to intense conflicts.
After handing Mbappé the most lucrative contract in the team’s history, PSG felt let down by his decision to sign a new deal in 2022. However, Mbappé was irate because he believed that pledges to sign important players had been broken. He was paraded in front of the crowd while brandishing a 2025 shirt after he inked the new contract. According to reports, Mbappé was irritated by this because his contract had an extra season option and ended in 2024.
In June of last year, Mbappé shocked PSG by telling the team he would not be accepting the opportunity to play for another year. Due to the fact that Mbappé’s contract was practically in its last year, PSG was forced to sell him in order to keep him when his deal expired.
A tense transfer conflict may have put an end to his PSG career in the summer of 2023. Mbappé was left off a preseason tour to Japan and South Korea and had to practice with bench players after telling the team he would not renew his contract for an additional year. Although the player turned down a 300 million euro move to Saudi Arabia, PSG stated that it would rather sell him than allow him to depart for free in 2024.
Mbappé stunned PSG in June last year by informing the club he would not take the option for an extra year. With his contract effectively into its final year, it put PSG in the position of needing to sell Mbappé to avoid losing him for free when the contract expired.
