The Kano Online Media Chapel (KOMC) has bestowed its prestigious Award of Excellence on the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, in recognition of his exemplary leadership, strong support for digital journalism, and commitment to responsible information management in the state.
The award was presented during a formal engagement with media stakeholders, highlighting KOMC’s appreciation of the Commissioner’s key role in strengthening collaboration between the state government and online media practitioners, an effort widely regarded as reshaping information dissemination in Kano.
Presenting the award, the Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir Dangambo, described Comrade Waiya as a bridge-builder and reform-minded public servant whose open-door policy has promoted trust, professionalism, and ethical journalism.
He said the Commissioner’s inclusive approach has fostered mutual respect and a shared vision for a peaceful, informed, and progressive Kano.
Dangambo praised Comrade Waiya for actively motivating journalists to uphold professionalism, ethical responsibility, and innovative storytelling in their work.
He noted that the Commissioner’s drive to sanitise the digital media space has gone beyond rhetoric, reflected in his strong support for capacity-building initiatives that train online journalists on ethics, regulations, and the responsibilities of modern journalism.
According to him, these efforts have helped curb misinformation, fake news, and sensational reporting within the state’s digital media environment, aligning Kano with global best practices in media governance where information managers serve as custodians of truth and social stability.
KOMC also presented a Special Award of Honour to the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, in recognition of his administration’s support for press freedom and media development.
The awards were presented on Thursday, marking another milestone in the evolving relationship between the Kano State Government and the online media community.
The event reaffirmed KOMC’s commitment to promoting excellence, accountability, and professionalism in digital journalism, while recognizing public office holders who demonstrate a genuine dedication to transparent and responsible governance.
