The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing climate change in the aviation sector.
He also noted that the Ministry is well-positioned to innovate and improve fuel efficiency to reduce emissions.
The Minister disclosed this when the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change paid him a courtesy at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
To reduce the effects of climate change and implement sustainable practices, Keyamo underlined the necessity of cooperation between the Parliament and the Aviation Ministry.
He said that this effort will result in appropriate policies to address environmental sustainability and climate change.
“The aviation sector is essential to attaining a sustainable future, and by working with the House Committee on Climate Change, we can make sure that Nigeria’s aviation sector sets the standard for implementing green practices and technologies.”
According to him, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) are among the Ministry’s agencies already working on important projects to lessen the effects of climate change.
Nigeria is dedicated to contributing to international efforts to tackle climate change as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
We support the Paris Agreement and the ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), which establishes challenging goals for the aviation industry to lessen its environmental impact.
The minister ordered the creation of a Communication Committee to document all of the ministry’s climate change accomplishments.
According to him, the committee will be made up of representatives from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, FAAN, NCAA, NAMA, NiMET, the two house committees on aviation, and the Special Assistant to the Minister on Climate Change. He asked that the committee submit its report every quarter.
In addition to thanking the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change, the Minister expressed the Ministry’s willingness to collaborate closely with the committee in order to put policies and initiatives into place that will establish an environmentally conscious aviation industry in Nigeria.
Hon. Kama Nkemkanma, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change and Security, praised the Ministry for its strategic contribution to Nigeria’s development and emphasized the need for greater cooperation in addressing climate change and its expanding effects on a number of industries, particularly aviation.
According to Hon. Nkemkanma, the visit was a component of the Committee’s responsibilities to interact with public and private sector organizations in an attempt to spur more action against the threat of climate change, which poses obstacles to Nigeria’s sustainable development.
The Chairman of the committee pointed out that Nigeria is working very hard to address the problem of climate change and put the nation on the path to sustainable growth and development with the help of the Climate Change Act 2021.
He praised the Minister for adhering to the Climate Change Act, pointing out that everyone’s praise was well-earned.
