The Kebbi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Mrs. Okolo Agatha Banki has urged all the serving Corps members in the state to emulate their predecessors in the areas of community development, medical and healthcare services, education, agriculture, and environmental sanitation.

She made this call on Monday while on a unity walk to commemorate NYSC the 50 years anniversary of the scheme.

Mrs. Banki also commended the serving corps members on their recent participation in conducting credible elections, thereby making sure that their names are written in the annals of history as good ambassadors of the Scheme.

“Gentleman, be disciplined in your conduct, embrace the dignity of labour, adhere strictly to instructions, and avoid all forms of negative youthful exuberance,” she said.

She stated further that NYSC was established by Gen. Yakubu Gowon the then Head of State, on the 22nd May 1973 to rehabilitate, reconstruct and reconcile our dear nation, after the Civil War.

“The objectives of the NYSC scheme include; developing common ties among the Nigerian youths and promoting national unity and integration, to ensure Nigerian youths, are exposed to the modes of living of the people in different parts of Nigeria, that Nigerian youths are encouraged to eschew religious intolerance by accommodating religious differences, remove prejudices, eliminate ignorance and confirm at first hand the many similarities among Nigerians of all ethnic groups.

“My Dear Children,  as we participate in this unity walk, let us remember the efforts of our founding fathers and see how best we could contribute our quota to sustain the Scheme in the years to come by keeping it visible” she added.

Mrs. Banki described the NYSC scheme as the scheme that remains one of the most reputable Institutions in West Africa, mobilizing and equipping young graduates for national development and equipping them with the necessary skills for self-reliance.

“The Management of the NYSC put together week-long activities and programs which begin with today’s unity walk. These programs are meant to bring to the fore the achievements of the Scheme over the years,” she explained.
