The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and transparency in governance while cautioning sections of the media against what it described as “reckless manipulation” of public opinion.
Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, disclosed during a press briefing on Sunday.
Addressing recent reports on allegations involving some state officials, Comrade Waiya, faulted what he called the recycling of old corruption stories to discredit the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
He insisted that the matter was already before the courts and under investigation by anti-graft agencies, urging journalists to uphold professionalism, fairness, and ethical standards in their reportage.
“It is clear that certain unpatriotic elements are bent on misleading the public and tarnishing the image of the government.
“Governor Yusuf has repeatedly demonstrated zero tolerance for corruption and has instituted far-reaching reforms to safeguard public funds,” Waiya said.
The Commissioner highlighted a series of reforms aimed at strengthening transparency, including strict enforcement of the Kano State Public Procurement Law (as amended in 2021), mandatory public advertisement of tenders, periodic procurement audits, the introduction of an Annual Procurement and Disposal Plan, and the digitization of procurement processes through the soon-to-be-launched Kano State Integrated Monitoring System (KSIMS).
Comrade Waiya added that the government had institutionalized community involvement in monitoring projects, held town hall meetings, and introduced radio programs to enlighten citizens on their rights and the state’s procurement reforms.
Other achievements listed include monthly monitoring of projects across all 44 local government areas, development of standard bidding documents, training of government officials on procurement best practices, and publication of State Executive Council resolutions and approved projects for public scrutiny.
The Commissioner further emphasized that financial transactions under the current administration are carried out independently by the Accountant General’s office without political interference or kickbacks, while the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) operates freely as the lead agency on accountability.
“These reforms underscore the Governor’s determination to institutionalize transparency, strengthen accountability, and ensure that government projects directly benefit the people of Kano State,” Waiya said.
With these initiatives, the Yusuf-led administration says it is laying a solid foundation for citizen-centered governance, where public resources are protected, projects are delivered efficiently, and the people remain fully informed of government activities.
