The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has spearheaded a transformative milestone in public communication with the induction of 72 Information Officers and Public Relations professionals into the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
The high-profile event took place at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano.
Comrade Waiya, who was also inducted and served as Chief Host, hailed the ceremony as a historic moment in repositioning public communication and information management in Kano State.
“This induction is not just ceremonial, it is a transformational step that reflects our resolve to professionalize public information services. It places Kano at the forefront of strategic and ethical communication in Nigeria,” he stated.
He reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s dedication to institutionalizing ethical standards and building communication capacity across all levels of governance. He also announced that another batch of about 50 officers would soon undergo a Master’s Class in Public Relations to qualify for full NIPR membership.
By joining NIPR, inductees gain professional recognition and commit to values such as truth, transparency, accuracy, and accountability in public service.
According to a statement on Thursday by the Director of Special Duties, Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Waiya raised the national and state leadership of NIPR for their collaboration, giving special acknowledgment to the President and Chairman of the NIPR Governing Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, FNIPR, who administered the induction oath.

Dr. Neliaku commended Kano State for championing professionalism in public relations and emphasized that induction was just the beginning. He urged members to pursue continuous growth, participate in conferences, and strive toward becoming Fellows of the Institute.
Neliaku highlighted NIPR’s rich history, founded in 1963 and chartered by Decree No. 16 of 1990, with over 31,000 members and partnerships spanning 126 countries.
The orientation lecture was delivered by Associate Professor Sule Yau Sule, a respected journalist and communication scholar.
He educated inductees on the structure, responsibilities, and expectations of NIPR membership, encouraging them to uphold ethics and embrace lifelong learning.
Kano NIPR Chairman, Comrade Aliyu Yusuf, gave the vote of thanks, applauding Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his support and recognizing Commissioner Waiya’s unwavering commitment to the initiative.
The induction marks a new era of professionalism and ethical communication within Kano State’s public service, signaling the government’s deepening commitment to transparency, accountability, and informed governance. Inductees received official certificates during the event.
