Kano Inaugurates 19-Member Committee On Education Recovery

Committed to making education the number one priority, the Kano State Government in collaboration with Partnership For Learning For All in Nigeria (PLANE), a UK-funded project, and Arewa Consultative Forum, Kano Chapter, are organizing a Conference on Education Recovery in the state.

Inaugurating the conference organizing committee in his office on Thursday, the Commissioner of Education, Umar Haruna Doguwa explained that the Conference is aimed at bringing diverse stakeholders from Kano and the global education community to deliberate on strategic education issues with outcomes that serve advocacy and purposes of shaping the quality of education service delivery in the State.

“The Conference will among others facilitate technical deliberations on education access, covering topical issues such as out-of-school children, Almajiri school system and how to address its challenges, Qur’anic and Tsangaya education, teacher professional development, girls education and female teacher shortage in rural areas,” he said.

Doguwa also disclosed that the 19-member committee was therefore set up to come up with proper arrangements that would make the program a success.

He highlighted that the terms of reference given to the committee include planning for the successful conduct of the conference, developing the budget and mobilization of funds, designing thematic coverage of the conference and development of programs, and coordinating conference logistics.

Other terms of reference given to the committee are mobilizing relevant education stakeholders within Kano, Nigeria, and globally to attend the conference, identifying sponsors and exhibitors of the conference, and as well as documenting and reporting on conference proceedings.

He further announced that the 19-member committee has Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Hon. Tajuddeen Gambo as Chairman while Hajiya Amina Umar from the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) would serve as Secretary.

Other members of the committee include Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Hajiya Kubra Imam, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Higher Education Muttaka Ilyasu Yakasai, Executive Chairman SUBEB, Yusif Kabir, Executive Secretary Qur’anic, and Islamiyya Schools Management Board Aminu K. Hassan and Director Planning Ministry of Education Munzali Jibril.

Among the members are the Executive Secretary State Agency for Mass Education Surajo Alkali, Chairman Education Committee, ACF Kano Malam Hadi Imam, representative of Arewa Consultative Forum Hajiya Mairo Bello, Education Adviser British High Commission Dr. Mikalu Ibrahim, Regional Coordinator of British High Commission in Kano, Dr. Adamu Maikano.

The remaining members of the committee include Deputy National Team Lead FCDO Sam Achimugu, Technical Adviser FCDO PLANE Joan Keaney Bray, Federal Lead FCDO PLANE Abiola Sanusi, Nuradden Lawan from PLANE, State Chairman SBMC Tijjani Haladu Baraya, Representative KSAFE, Ladidi Fagge and State Team Lead PLANE FCDO Umar Lawan.

The Commissioner however called on the members to use their vast experience and come up with designed programs to ensure the success of the conference.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Kubra Imam expressed appreciation to the members for responding to the ministry invitation to serve on the committee and prayed for Almighty Allah to give them the wisdom to perform the tasks ahead of them.

Speaking on behalf of the committee members, the Chairman of the Committee Hon. Tajuddeen Gambo thanked the state government for finding them worthy to carry out the tasks and assured of the Committee’s determination to complete its assignment within the time given.
