At least 9,680 volunteers are set to participate in the ongoing online pre-voter registration exercise across the 484 wards in the 44 local government areas of Kano State.

A minimum of 20 volunteers equipped with Android phones will be deployed in each ward, with the exact number depending on the size of its polling units.

This was part of the resolutions reached during a meeting between the Kano State Mobilization Taskforce on Voter Registration and the 44 local government chairmen, held on Monday at the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The meeting agreed that the volunteers, indigenes of their respective areas, including women, would be trained on the online pre-voter registration process before commencement.

They are also expected to cascade the training to other volunteers at polling unit levels to ensure effective coverage.

Chairman of the Taskforce and Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, explained that the meeting aimed to build synergy between the Taskforce and local government leaders for a seamless exercise.

He noted that Kano’s low participation in previous online registration was alarming, despite being the most populous state in the country.

Waiya appealed to council chairmen to intensify public sensitization on the importance of voter registration, stressing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to providing the necessary logistical support.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muhammad Tajo Othman Zaura, urged the council chairmen to handle the process as a civic duty beyond party interests, while ALGON Vice Chairman and Chairman of Nasarawa LGA, Yusuf Imam Ogan Boye, reaffirmed the councils’ readiness to ensure success.

The Taskforce also engaged 484 Councillors at the Coronation Hall, Government House, where Waiya sought their full support. The Chairman of the Councillors Forum, Bashir Achika, described the exercise as crucial to the electoral process and pledged their cooperation for its success.
