A mobile court in Kano State has convicted six individuals for various sanitation-related offences committed around their business premises.
The convicts were arrested after being found guilty of maintaining dirty surroundings, failing to provide waste bins, dumping refuse into drainages, and placing sand, stones, and blocks on the France Road in Sabon Gari, Kano.
Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Bahijja H. Aliyu, read the charges to the defendants, who pleaded guilty on the spot.
After listening to the case, Magistrate Halima Wali sentenced each of them to two weeks in correctional custody or, alternatively, to pay a fine of ₦200,000.
“The court finds you guilty as charged. Cleanliness is not optional — it is a civic duty,” Magistrate Wali declared while handing down the ruling.
Earlier, officials of the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) had issued warnings to the offenders and directed them to clean up their surroundings and remove construction materials obstructing the road. However, they allegedly ignored the directives.
In delivering judgment, the court held that the actions of the accused persons “violated environmental sanitation laws”, stressing that their behavior posed health and safety risks to the public.
The offences confirmed by the court include: Maintaining unclean surroundings,, failure to provide waste bins, dumping refuse in drainages, and obstructing public roads with sand, stones and blocks.
