Kano State has recorded a major public health milestone of 13 consecutive months without a single case of poliovirus, reaffirming its leadership in Nigeria’s polio eradication efforts.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, disclosed this during the State Task Force Committee meeting on Primary Health Care (PHC) held at the eHealth Africa Auditorium, Bompai.

Dr. Yusuf described the achievement as a product of sustained government commitment, strategic planning, and strong collaboration with development partners.

He noted that the milestone comes at a critical time as the state prepares to commence the first round of the 2026 Polio Immunization Exercise scheduled for Saturday, 28th March 2026, assuring that all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a successful campaign.

Development partners, including the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO), commended the Kano State Government for its outstanding performance.

They described the 13-month polio-free record as commendable and urged the state to sustain the momentum toward total eradication.

In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, represented by the Madakin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nabahani, called on District Heads to intensify community mobilization efforts to ensure that all eligible children are vaccinated.

Similarly, the Chief of Staff to the Executive Governor, Dr. Sulaiman Sani Wali, applauded the support of development partners and recognized Madobi LGA as the best-performing area in immunization coverage, urging other LGAs to improve their performance.

Earlier, the Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Prof. Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, highlighted key achievements in strengthening primary healthcare delivery across the state.

He emphasized ongoing reforms aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services at the grassroots, while the Kano State Government called on all residents to support the immunization exercise by making their children available for vaccination.
