The Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC), in collaboration with FCDO Lafiya, has organised a two-day Media Focused Emergency Risk Communication workshop for journalists from Kano State.
The workshop is taking place in Kaduna State.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, said the training is aimed at strengthening the capacity of media practitioners to report accurate, timely, and verified health information, especially during public health emergencies.
Dr Yusuf explained that the workshop will equip journalists with the necessary skills to report health issues responsibly, without causing panic, while also educating and creating awareness among the public.
He added that the initiative will further strengthen collaboration between the media and the health sector, and support the achievement of health sector goals through effective and responsible information dissemination.
Also speaking, the Director General of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control, Professor Muhammad Adamu Abbas, said the workshop is designed to expose health reporters to professional and effective approaches to reporting health emergencies, with strong emphasis on facts, verification, and accuracy.
Professor Abbas stressed that health reporting should focus on public education, awareness, and preventive measures, rather than the spread of unverified or misleading information.
The workshop featured technical presentations and interactive sessions on emergency risk communication, responsible health reporting, and best practices in engaging the public during health emergencies.
