Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Sunday by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, in Dutse.
Dr Lawan succeeds his father, the late Emir of Gumel, HRH Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after 46 years on the throne.
According to the statement, the appointment followed recommendations by the Gumel Emirate Council Kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
“Upon the recommendation of both the Gumel Emirate Council Kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Jigawa State, Malam (Dr.) Umar A. Namadi, FCA, has approved the appointment of Dr. Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel,” Ibrahim said.
Until his appointment, the new Emir held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel and served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
The state government also expressed appreciation to the Gumel Emirate Council Kingmakers, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, for their role in the selection process.
Governor Namadi further commended the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, who constitute the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, for their advice and contributions to the process.
The governor congratulated the new Emir and wished him a successful reign and many years of service to the Gumel Emirate and Nigeria.
The state government also extended its condolences to the royal family, the people of Gumel Emirate, the Council of Chiefs and the people of Jigawa State over the death of the late Emir.
It prayed Allah to forgive the late monarch’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.
