IRI Sensitizes Stakeholders on Roadmap to Women Inclusion in Politics

The International Republican Institute (IRI) organized a roadmap amplification program on women’s democracy network and their inclusion in politics.

The meeting which was held on Wednesday at Tahir Guest Palace convened Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Religious Leaders, and other relevant stakeholders. 

In his welcoming remarks, Baiko Suleiman Dass, Senior Program Associate, IRI, said the gathering is aimed at advancing freedom and democracy among women as well as improving the electoral process in Nigeria.

Etty Peter Victor, Program Officer, said: “We launch the roadmap in January to serve as a blueprint to CSOs and stakeholders in order to coordinate the women’s political participation. 

“We identify the challenges and also profound solutions to lack of women participation in governance.”

She added that the gathering is being circulated in all the regions in Nigeria to document their political engagement among women.

During an experience-sharing session chaired by Maryam Garba Usman of the Centre for Advocacy in Gender and Social Inclusion, (CAGSI) said; there are so many challenges faced by women participation mostly in Northern Nigeria which ranges from social, economic, and religious challenges. 

In their separate goodwill messages, the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs and the Counsel of Ulama appreciated the organizers of the event and expressed their optimism that if opportunities were given to women in governance, they will effect positive changes in the general administration of public offices.
