The National Association of Persons with Disability (NAPWPD) has demanded the domestication and implementation of disability laws in Nigeria.

NAPWPD asserted that the domestication of disability laws should safeguard the rights of wheelchair users in a statement issued on Friday to commemorate International Wheelchair Day 2024.

The Chairman of the National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD), Kano Chapter, Yahaya A Yahaya on Friday read the statement on behalf of the National President, Comrade Ridwanu Abdullahi.

He said: “Wheelchairs make a massive difference in a person’s ability to function in the world.

“Unfortunately, not everyone who needs a wheelchair can get one. There are tens of thousands of people around us who need wheelchairs.

“We gathered to celebrate the profound impact of wheelchairs on individuals’ lives, fostering appreciation and empowerment.”

“The celebration seeks to raise global awareness about the critical importance of wheelchair accessibility and inclusivity in society.

“We also gathered to provide support and recognition for individuals facing mobility challenges, promoting dignity and independence.”

Abdullahi honored and acknowledged the invaluable contributions of caregivers, organizations, and communities that aid wheelchair users.

“We advocate passionately for enhancement of global wheelchair access, striving for a more inclusive and accessible world,” he added.

NAPWPD Demands

• The domestication of disability laws where none exist to safeguard the rights of wheelchair users.

• The development of a minimum accessibility standard code for implementing the law regarding access to the environment.

• The modification and retrofitting of all public spaces and facilities to comply with relevant accessibility standard codes and universal design.

• The government makes budgetary provisions for making necessary modifications and retrofitting of existing buildings.

• That the government ensure adherence to building code/ minimum accessibility standard

and that the Building Control Department of the States does not approve new buildings that do not comply with the standard.

• That government and indeed the society make necessary adjustments to the environmental conditions to allow for inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in the life of the community

The International Wheelchair Day was created to raise awareness about the significance of wheelchairs and their positive impact on the lives of individuals with mobility challenges.

It aims to celebrate, raise awareness, and advocate for improved accessibility and support for individuals who rely on wheelchairs worldwide.
