The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC–RFT) Nigeria Office has commended the Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, for what it described as his prompt and responsible action in receiving Walida Abdullahi Ibrahim, a citizen of the state, and ensuring her welfare and dignity were safeguarded.
In a statement issued by the Country Director of IHRC–RFT Nigeria Office, Special Consultative Status – UN ECOSOC, Amb. Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the organization, which holds special consultative status under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), praised the governor’s intervention as a demonstration of citizen-focused leadership and a commitment to the protection of human rights without discrimination.
In the statement, IHRC–RFT stated that the governor’s action reflects the responsibility of government authorities to uphold the rights and well-being of citizens, describing it as a model worthy of emulation.
However, IHRC–RFT also called on all relevant authorities, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS), to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into allegations leveled against an official identified as Ifeanyi.
The organization urged that any individual found culpable should be arraigned before a competent court of law, with all proceedings and punishments carried out strictly in accordance with legal provisions.
It further stressed that verdicts should be made public to serve as a deterrent against future violations and to reinforce the rule of law.
Reiterating its stance, the commission maintained that no one is above the law, emphasizing that offenses, especially those involving human rights violations, must attract appropriate accountability to protect the dignity and integrity of the community.
IHRC–RFT Nigeria affirmed that, as an international organization operating under UN ECOSOC guidelines, it would continue to monitor the matter to ensure that all legal procedures are fairly adjudicated and fully respected.
The statement expressed confidence that transparent enforcement of justice would help prevent a recurrence of similar incidents and strengthen public trust in the rule of law in Nigeria.
