The Kano State-led Accountability Mechanism (KanSLAM) has called on the Kano State Government to prioritize the establishment of a Disability Commission as it joined the global community in celebrating World Disability Day 2024.
This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” underscores the importance of empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to lead and contribute to society.
Since the passage of the Disability Law in 2021, Kano State has made significant strides in recognizing the rights of PWDs. However, KanSLAM emphasized that the full implementation of the law, particularly the creation of the Disability Commission, remains crucial.
The proposed commission would ensure the effective implementation of policies that promote accessibility, equity, and inclusion for PWDs, providing a platform for advocacy, resource allocation, and accountability.
KanSLAM highlighted the contributions of individuals like Malam Aminu Tudunwada, who runs a tricycle workshop for PWDs, as a testament to the leadership and innovation PWDs can bring when empowered. The organization stressed that establishing the Disability Commission would help translate the commitments of the Disability Law into tangible benefits for the PWD community.
The statement also called for stronger monitoring and evaluation systems to ensure the effective implementation of the law, emphasizing that PWDs should be active participants in shaping a more inclusive Kano State. KanSLAM reaffirmed its dedication to advocating for the rights of PWDs and urged the government to take immediate action to fulfill its promises.
Signed by Nafisa Murtala of the KanSLAM Knowledge Management Committee, on behalf of Pharm. Maimuna Yakubu, CSO Co-Chair, the statement called for collaboration in building a future where PWDs are not only included but lead the way toward meaningful change.
