Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has forwarded the names of Interim Management Committee members for the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state to the House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Ismail Falgore, announced this on Tuesday at plenary while reading the governor’s request.

Addressing journalists after the plenary, the House Majority leader, Husseini Dala, explained that the list is comprised of 17 members, including the chairman, vice chairman, and secretary for each of the 44 local government councils.

He stated that section 58 [A] of the Local Government Law states that in the event of the expiration of the tenure of the local government council in the state, it becomes imperative to conduct an election.

The house has set up an ad-hoc committee to screen the nominees on Wednesday, March 6.

Similarly, the Speaker read another letter from the governor seeking confirmation of the appointment of seven nominees as commissioners and members of the State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

The nominees are Kabir Jibrin, Salisu Muhammad Tudun Kaya, Shehu Na’Allah Kura, Isyaku Ibrahim Kunya, Garba Ibrahim Tsanyawa, and Amina Inuwa Fagge, while Anas Muhammad Mustafa is nominated as secretary of the commission.

The assembly has referred its standing committee on KANSIEC to screen the nominees and report to the house within two days.

The governor had previously submitted the name of Professor Sani Malumfashi to the assembly for confirmation as chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission. The appointment of the chairman and members of the electoral commission will kick start the process for local council elections in the state.
