Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the final settlement of a longstanding financial obligation, disbursing over N8.2 billion in outstanding allowances to 1,371 former Local Government Council members.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the payment marks the successful conclusion of a three-phase exercise initiated by his administration to clear all backlogged severance gratuity, furniture, accommodation, and leave/recess allowances owed to councillors who served between 2014 and 2024.

Governor Yusuf, said the action was more than a financial transaction but a “restoration of dignity, trust, and justice.”

He recalled a promise made in August 2025 to conclude the matter before the end of December, declaring, “That statement was not mere rhetoric; it was a solemn pledge anchored on commitment and compassion.”

The governor detailed the phased approach: an initial payment of N1.8 billion to 903 ex-councillors 2014-2017 in May, a second tranche of N5.6 billion to 1,198 beneficiaries 2018-2020 in August, and today’s “grand finale” of N8.26 billion for those who served from 2021 to 2024. Cumulatively, the state has paid N15.67 billion to settle the historic liability.

He also announced that serving councillors whose tenure began in 2024 have received 50% of their furniture allowance, amounting to N1.27 billion, to ensure equity.

Governor Yusuf commended the ministries and agencies involved for ensuring a transparent process and thanked the Former Councillors’ Forum for their cooperation.
