The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has launched the International Centre for Climate Change, Flood, and Environmental Sustainability to spearhead research and solutions against flooding, erosion, and other environmental challenges across Nigeria.
Speaking at the inauguration on Thursday in Lokoja, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, said the centre was established in response to the worsening effects of climate change on the environment and human lives.
“Lokoja, at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, has endured devastating consequences from recurrent floods and environmental challenges.
“These realities compel us not only to study climate change but also to pioneer sustainable solutions that will safeguard lives, livelihoods, and future generations,” he said.
Prof. Akinwumi described the centre as more than a research hub, calling it “a beacon of hope, innovation, and resilience.”
He explained that the centre would provide evidence-based research, policy direction, and community-driven interventions to mitigate flood risks and foster sustainable development.
The Centre’s Director, Prof. Jimmy Adegoke, emphasized that climate change is a global crisis requiring urgent and collective action.
“Flooding is a major challenge in this region due to climate change, which respects no boundaries.
“What is expected of us is urgent response, collaboration, and unwavering action to fight this trend for the good of humanity,” he stated.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Olarewaju Ifatimehin, said the centre represents both an academic unit and a symbol of resilience and innovation.
According to him, it will serve as a hub for research, policy engagement, and community outreach on climate change adaptation and mitigation.
