The ELIP-Initiative has commended the Jigawa State Government for the recent release of terminal and death benefits to retirees and families of deceased civil servants under the State and Local Government Pension Scheme, describing the action as a meaningful step toward fulfilling long-standing obligations to public servants.

In a statement signed on Wednesday by its Executive Director, Isah Mustapha, the ELIP-Initiative said the state’s sustained interventions, including two financial bailouts and a comprehensive review of the pension law, reflect the administration’s “tangible commitment to the welfare of those who have served the state.”

However, the ELIP Initiative noted that many retirees and bereaved families continue to face systemic bottlenecks that expose them to severe socio-economic hardship.

According to the ELIP-Initiative, delays that sometimes last up to a year before retirees receive their benefits have pushed many into debt, psychological distress, and worsening health conditions, eroding their dignity after years of service.

To strengthen recent progress and ensure a more humane pension system, the organisation urged Governor Umar Namadi and the State Executive Council to consider two key reforms.

ELIP-Initiative called for a directive mandating the Pension Scheme to place all verified retirees on the monthly pension payroll immediately after retirement, even while their gratuity is being processed.

This, the organisation said, would guarantee a steady income during the transition period and prevent avoidable hardship.

ELIP-Initiative also appealed for the revival of sensitisation and support programmes to equip retiring officers with financial literacy, enterprise development skills, and preparation for post-service life.

It reiterated its appreciation for the government’s “demonstrated commitment and passion” for public welfare, expressing confidence that adopting these measures would further position Jigawa as a leader in responsible and people-centred pension administration.

ELIP-Initiative reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance, transparency, social inclusion, and accountability in Jigawa State, with a focus on public finance, budget tracking, climate action, and empowerment of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
