EFCC Launches Probe Into Alleged Embezzlement of ₦100m Justice For Mohbad Fund

News Desk

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of over ₦100 million raised under the #JusticeForMohbad campaign.

The probe follows a formal petition submitted by the Moor Pearse Foundation (MPF), a civil society organisation advocating for transparency and justice in the wake of Mohbad’s sudden and controversial death in September 2023.

Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, died under mysterious circumstances on September 23, 2023. His death sparked a wave of protests, online campaigns, and widespread outrage across Nigeria and the diaspora, with many Nigerians demanding justice and accountability for the rising music star.

According to the group, various fundraising campaigns were launched, drawing donations from Nigerians at home and abroad. The MPF claims that while over ₦100 million in Naira was deposited into bank accounts, and an additional $26,000 was raised from international donors, the full funds were allegedly not remitted or properly accounted for.

“All efforts to bring those in charge of the funds to account have proven abortive,” the Moor Pearse Foundation stated in a press release.

“This petition to the EFCC shows the need for financial accountability alongside the pursuit of justice in Mohbad’s alleged homicide.”

The EFCC, according to MPF, has officially acknowledged receipt of the petition and has begun an investigation into the management and disbursement of the donations, which were intended to support legal, forensic, and investigative processes relating to Mohbad’s death.

Chairman of the Foundation, Chief Dr. Adewale Oyinlola, emphasized the significance of the probe. “The pursuit of justice in alleged homicide cases is of paramount importance. Failure to thoroughly investigate such matters can erode public trust in the justice system and embolden potential perpetrators,” he said.

The Foundation added that transparency and accountability in handling public funds are crucial, especially in emotionally charged cases like that of Mohbad, where public sentiment remains high and the demand for truth and justice is unwavering.

“We urge the general public, donors, and well-meaning Nigerians who contributed to the fund to remain calm and trust the process as the EFCC carries out a thorough investigation,” the statement concluded.

Mohbad’s death continues to generate debate across the country, with calls for justice from fans, activists, and stakeholders in the entertainment industry.
