The Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED) on Wednesday held a one-day workshop with residents and stakeholders to strengthen maternal and child healthcare through accountability interventions in Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State.

Omoniyi Adewoye, Senior Program Officer, CHRICED, highlighted that the program is a community initiative to enlighten the public on the Kano State free maternal and child healthcare law which has been passed by the Kano State House of Assembly.

He noted that “The law has been passed into law, but we are waiting for in government to implement it into action before handing it over to the incoming government on 29th May 2023.

“However, as part of the objectives of the program, we are preparing the mindset of the public in knowing their roles to play towards the implementation of the FMCH Law.

“Because the law entails different rules and responsibilities for stakeholders, healthcare workers, community members, and the government.”

Adewoye reflected that the CHRICED project has two focal local governments, Gwale and Kumbotso, to interact with community leaders, religious clerics, youth groups, and community women on ways to reduce maternal mortality.

Hajia Lami Umar, a resident of Diso in Gwale Local Government Area expressed happiness with the passage of the FMCH Law and pledged to carry forward the enlightenment to her community.

The highlights of the event was a plenary discussion session with participants on how to strengthen and mitigate the high occurrence of maternal mortality as well as practicing hygienic healthcare.
