The Kano State Council of Ulama has pledged to support the Centre for Information Technology and Development’s (CITAD) Plant One Million Trees (P1MT) campaign by encouraging residents to plant trees to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability.

The council’s chairman, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, made the pledge on Tuesday during an advocacy visit by the P1MT team to the council in Kano.

Khalil said the initiative aligned with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which encourage tree planting and environmental protection.

He said planting trees would help address climate change and other environmental disasters while providing lasting benefits to humans and animals.

“The Prophet mentioned that we should plant trees and that animals that eat from it, humans that eat from it, and people that stay under their shades would be counted as ‘Sadakat-ud-Jariyya’, for us, both here and in the hereafter,” he said.

The cleric also appealed to CITAD to provide tree seedlings for distribution to council members across the 44 local government areas of Kano State to encourage wider participation in the campaign.

Earlier, a member of the P1MT team, Buhari Abba, said the campaign was a regional environmental initiative launched by CITAD in September 2026 to combat desertification, vegetation loss and climate change across the 19 northern states.

Abba said CITAD was working with stakeholders, including the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, to plant and nurture one million indigenous trees across Northern Nigeria within one year, ending in September 2027.

He explained that the campaign had an official digital portal, p1mt.ng, where members of the public could register their tree-planting activities and enable the organisation to document plantings and monitor the survival rates of the trees.

Responding, Khalil commended CITAD for its efforts and pledged the council’s support in mobilising the public to participate in the campaign.

He urged residents to plant trees and upload details of their activities to the portal to ensure proper record-keeping and accountability.
