The Management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has introduced a new Identification (I.D) card system for relatives staying with patients on admission, in a move aimed at strengthening security and improving patient care within the facility.

Under the new policy, each admitted patient will be entitled to only one designated caregiver, who will be issued an official I.D card. The hospital explained that in situations where caregiving responsibilities change, the card must be transferred to the incoming caregiver to ensure continuity and proper monitoring.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe, said the initiative is designed to ensure proper identification of patients’ relatives while enhancing security, control, and overall coordination within the hospital environment.

He also raised concerns about the risks associated with overcrowding in hospital wards, urging the public to avoid visiting in large groups or bringing along young children, who are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases.

According to him, congestion during visiting hours not only disrupts patients’ rest and recovery but also undermines critical infection prevention and control measures.

The hospital management further appealed to the public to strictly adhere to officially designated visiting hours, which vary by day of the week, weekend, and public holiday.

The directive, issued through the hospital’s Information Unit, forms part of broader efforts to create a safer, more organized, and patient-friendly healthcare environment.
