Having reached an agreement with the FA this week, Thomas Tuchel is expected to be announced as the new manager of England.
The former manager of Chelsea and Bayern Munich is expected to replace Gareth Southgate as England’s captain and guide the country to the 2026 World Cup in a swift turn of events. Though Tuchel is reportedly close to signing a contract with the Football Association, he is still a strong candidate to take over at Manchester United if Erik ten Hag is fired in the upcoming weeks. Tuchel is favored to finally bring the Three Lions over the finish line in a significant competition. He is a Champions League winner and a tournament specialist.
With Tuchel’s appointment, the FA has shifted its preference from English-born candidates. According to reports, Pep Guardiola was contacted by the governing body for the position as well, but it was unclear if he would accept it even if it meant leaving Manchester City at the conclusion of the 2024–25 season and his present contract. Working with Premier League players is something Tuchel has done often. Just over a year ago, he welcomed Harry Kane, a former Tottenham striker, to Munich.
The 51-year-old manager will lead England for the first time as a manager of German descent. In addition, Tuchel will only be the third foreign coach—after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello—to captain the Three Lions.
Lee Carsley, the interim manager, was scheduled to oversee two more games in November before he steps down, but his remarks recently highlighting England’s dire need for a top-tier coach might have put a stop to his tenure in the dugout after just four games. Tuchel may start for the Three Lions right away when they play Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month, despite some sources indicating he won’t begin until January 1, 2025.
