The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly assaulting his mother and being in unlawful possession of an English Beretta pistol with eight rounds of live ammunition.
A statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident occurred on January 25, 2026, at about 7:30 p.m., when police officers attached to the Panshekara Division, Kano, responded to a distress call from Panshekara Quarters.
On arrival, the officers discovered that the suspect had reportedly been mercilessly beating his mother at their residence.
According to Police sources, the suspect fled the scene upon sighting the officers.
His mother, however, handed over an English Beretta pistol and eight rounds of ammunition, which she said she found in her son’s bag.
She reportedly refused to return the firearm to him, an action that allegedly triggered the violent attack.
She further expressed concern over a noticeable change in her son’s behaviour since his return from a New Year celebration.
The suspect was later arrested and is currently in police custody, while investigations are ongoing.
Commending the woman for her courage, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, praised her bravery in standing up against violent behaviour and preventing potential harm.
“The actions of this mother are commendable, and we appreciate her courage in confronting her son’s violent conduct,” the CP said.
Parents are also advised to closely monitor their children’s activities and promptly report any suspicious behaviour to the appropriate authorities.
