In a video promoting her upcoming book, former first lady Melania Trump seems to have indicated her support for abortion rights.
Mrs. Trump states in the brief video clip that she is in favor of women’s “individual freedom,” calling it a “fundamental right that all women possess from birth.”
It happens the day after a newspaper article revealed an excerpt from her soon-to-be published memoir, in which she supposedly adopts an even more pro-choice attitude.
Given that her husband has claimed credit for helping to overturn Roe v Wade, which reversed nearly half a century of protections for women’s reproductive rights, Mrs. Trump appears to be in favor of access to abortion.
In a black-and-white video posted on Mrs. Trump’s X account, she defended individual freedom as a fundamental principle, stating that there is no room for compromise in this essential right that all women possess from birth.
The video comes after The Guardian published an excerpt from her upcoming book, Melania, which emphasizes the importance of women having autonomy in deciding their preferences for having children, free from government intervention. Trump questioned the meaning of her body and her choice and emphasized that restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body.
Abortion access is a key issue in the upcoming 2024 election, with Donald Trump’s fluctuating position on the issue. During his campaign, Trump refused to take a position on a national ban on abortion, arguing that it should be left to individual states. This has put him at odds with conservatives who seek to restrict the procedure nationwide.
Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has sought to capitalize on Trump’s position to galvanize voters, framed Trump as a threat to women’s autonomy due to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
