As many Nigerian states grapple with low Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Kano State has successfully doubled its IGR, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for 2024 and corroborated by Statista, a leading data platform in Nigeria.
In a statement issued to newsmen, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, said the administration swiftly took decisive steps after assuming office, revamping the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) to enhance efficiency and boost revenue generation.
The Governor’s Information Manager also said it is pertinent that Governor Yusuf employed one of the best hands to handle the state’s revenue generation, hence the result of Kano topping the chart in 2024.
The data released for the leading movers among the states by the National Bureau of Statistics for 2024 are as follows:
2024 IGR
1 🟢 Enugu — ₦180.50 billion, +433%
2 🔴 Kano — ₦74.77 billion, +100%
3 🟤 Cross River — ₦47.02 billion, +49%

While in 2023, Kano struggled to reach the 50 billion naira mark in internally generated revenue.

Adam added that the revenue generation doubled by 100 percent when the government assumed office after 2023.
According to him, the government is not even keen on taxing the masses, like the Adaidaita Sahu tricycle riders, who were exploited by the previous administration.
“People are asking where the government is getting the funds for infrastructural projects. This is the only way.
“Among the strategies employed by the administration to improve the state’s IGR is blocking leakages and loopholes.
“And as a result, the total revenue generated in 2024 has doubled that of 2023.”
Special Adviser on Information added that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is assuring the people of the state that he is grateful for the cooperation the administration is receiving from the populace, with a promise to do more.
Adam added that the state government will continue to implement more infrastructural projects using the internally generated revenue.
