The Institute for Labour Studies and Development has called on government at all levels to initiate and engage in mass supply and distribution of free food. It also urged wealthy individuals and organizations to help indigent people in the society with food.
The call was made in a statement on Saturday by the Chief Consultant of the organization, Comrade (Dr.) Auwalu Mudi Yakasai.
According to him, last year, the Institute commemorated the day in a low key due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
He said it is alarming that today a lot of people go to sleep with empty stomachs in the so-called modern-day Nigeria.
“Two prominent indigenes of Kano State, Late Magajin Garin Kano Alhaji Inuwa Wada and Late Khalifah Sheikh Isyaku Rabiu who were legendry in feeding the needy, were identified and honored posthumously.
“The third one was Hajiya Mariya Sanusi Dantata who was also identified and honored for her tireless efforts in feeding the poor.”
This year, the Institute is calling on the government, wealthy individuals and organizations to give priority attention to mass supply and distribution of free food to the needy taking into consideration the current high cost of food items and anticipated food crisis.
Comrade Mudi commended the ongoing mass supply and distribution of FREE BREAD in Kano by DANGOTE FOUNDATION as well as distribution of FREE FOOD by Alhaji Abdussamad Isyaku Rabiu, saying “the gesture is encouraging and worthy of emulation.”
World Food Day is annually held on October 16 to commemorate the founding of the United Nations’ (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It helps raise people’s awareness of problems in food supply and distribution.
This year’s World Food Day came at a very crucial moment of our Food history when many Nigerians are finding it very difficult to have a single meal per day, not to talk of three-square meals.
It is frightening that the low rainy season coupled with the cases of banditry and kidnapping especially in the northern part of the country made it impossible for most farmers to go to the farm, a situation that further worsens the already starving populace.
