During a phone conversation between the two leaders, the U.S. State Department said that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked Senegalese President Macky Sall to reinstate Senegal’s election schedule and presidential transition timeline on Tuesday.
Blinken expressed “severe worries” during the discussion regarding Senegal’s present political climate in light of moves to postpone the presidential election.
Senegal is in crisis mode following the sudden postponement of the referendum scheduled for February 25 to December, which has heightened opposition to what many perceive to be an attempt to extend Sall’s mandate and a threat to one of the last democracies in coup-hit West Africa.
