Excitement filled my heart as I embarked on a journey from Rivers State to attend the Induction Ceremony of my young brother, Dr. Dhab, in the prestigious ABSU. Little did I know that my visit would take an unexpected turn, immersing me in an extraordinary experience.
Stopping by the vibrant city of Umuahia, I was warmly greeted by my dear friend, Marvelous, who had come to pick me up. With a mischievous grin, he exclaimed, “Eli, thank God you’re here! I need to run an errand at a nearby facility. Come, join me.” Intrigued by his sense of urgency, I willingly accompanied him on this unexpected detour. Our destination? The Abia State Children Specialist Hospital is aptly named after the remarkable AnneMarie.
The hospital emanated an aura that effortlessly fostered an atmosphere of healing and wellness for its young patients. My knowledge of recent studies confirmed that thoughtful designs and a soothing ambiance in hospitals contribute to the psychological well-being of children, facilitating their swift recovery. Stepping through the doors, I immersed myself in a space far from a typical medical facility. The vastness of the building struck me first, creating an aura of openness and tranquility.
As we made our way inside, we were met by a cheerful staff member at the entrance. Her infectious smile made it seem we had brought news of her long-awaited promotion. I couldn’t help but mutter, marveling at the positive energy radiating from the hospital’s entrance.
Marvelous then informed me that our purpose for being there was to conduct a routine inspection on behalf of the hospital’s director. With a playful grin, he encouraged me, “Eli, put on your Ph.D. in Psychology,” a phrase he often used when he wanted me to be observant and analytical. Of course, I didn’t possess a doctorate in Psychology, at least not yet.
As we explored the hospital, we exchanged warm greetings with the dedicated staff we encountered. What struck me most was the remarkable age diversity among the personnel— a harmonious blend of youthful vibrancy and seasoned expertise, all working together to provide exceptional care.
Yet, what truly left an indelible mark on me was the sight of the hospital’s equipment. The Anne Marie Jackson Specialist Children’s Hospital boasted an array of cutting-edge, state-of-the-art machinery. This technological prowess positioned the hospital at a competitive advantage, ensuring it delivered the best possible medical services. However, it became apparent that the extensive equipment required a substantial power supply, leading the hospital to rely on a diesel generator, a cost-intensive solution.
Before bidding farewell to the hospital, I leaned closer to Marvelous and whispered, “This facility will undoubtedly overshadow the crowded Pediatric Unit at FMC. Its serene environment and impeccable standards will do a great disservice to the overcrowding and hectic rush there.” Marvelous, intrigued by my observation, he inquired about the hospital’s patient influx. Though acknowledging a steady growth, the administrator admitted that it hadn’t been swift.
Compelled by my experience, I felt a deep urge to share my thoughts and impressions. Thus, I implore you all to recognize the presence of something truly remarkable in Umuahia.
