The Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has expressed concern over the killings of innocent farmers by armed Boko haram insurgents in Borno state.
The Sultan made the comments during the first National summit on date planting in Dange Sokoto State.
He said what happened in Maiduguri is in human and barbaric.
He explained that traditional rulers in the country would continue to advise government on the need to protect the lives and property of the citizenry.
The Sultan further described the wanton slaughter of farmers as a challenge to the nation’s food security.
He called on security outfits to join hands together to find a lasting solution to the security challenge facing the country.
The Sultan who was a guest of honour at the Date Summit called on the partners to the program to remain committed in the implementation and execution of the noble objective.
The Date palm is said to be panted in 300 heaters allocated by the Sokoto State Government.
The Chairman of the Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission, Malam Lawal Maidoki thanked the association for choosing Sokoto as venue for the launching, saying that the state has the second largest Date farm in Nigeria.
He said in the next five years, the state would start producing dates in commercial quantity as the Date palm to be planted are of high breed which would start yielding in four years time.
